Rough Guide to Green Living
The most recent of the various full-size books I’ve written for Rough Guides: a critical-thinking guide to all aspects of green living. It evolved from my two earlier green books.
Carbon literacy tools
I oversaw the creation of three visual carbon calculators for the Guardian.
The Rough Guide to Climate Change
I am the contributing editor of the Rough Guide to Climate Change, which was shortlisted for Science Book of the Year in 2007. The third edition came out in early 2011.
I was one of the team that set up Lighter Later, the campaign to change the UK’s clocks to create social and environmental benefits.
I was a consultant and writer for this major project, which ran in 2008 before BBC Worldwide appeared to decide that it overstepped their remit.
The Manchester Report
I co-ran a major public event at the Manchester Festival focusing on large-scale solutions to climate change and wrote the subsequent report.
Guardian Environment Network
I set up the Guardian Environment Network, a content-sharing network of the world’s best environment websites.
I helped shape and set up Cool Earth, a campaign to protect critically endangered rainforests and support local communities.
I set up and run GoGreenLights, which sells and promotes low-energy lightbulbs.
Just My Type
I love typography and design and had thought about writing a book about fonts. In the end I commissioned Simon Garfield to do it for Profile instead, and it was a big hit in 2010.
I was an executive editor on books and digital for many years at Penguin Books, where I was based within Rough Guides.
I wrote various layman-friendly technology books for Rough Guides.
A long time ago, I did a classical music degree at King’s College London. That led to being contributing editor on various music books and one magazine.
